This was the first GPS I owned (received as a gift in 2000) and it does 90% of what most recreational hikers need it to do. Although there are no built in maps, the eTrex is great for retracing your steps, seeing how far and high you've climbed and how fast you've gone. You can even use it for geocaching if you're into that. Simple to use and rugged, this is a great GPS for first-time buyers.
