1968: On one of his frequent hiking trips through California and Nevada desert canyons, the late outdoor guru Colin Fletcher stumbled over a remote cave where he found an old wooden trunk and eventually the possessions of someone who had called this place home for a longer period of time.
After many years of research and detective work, Fletcher identified an early 20th-century prospector called "Chuckawalla Bill" as the cave dweller. In his 1981 book "The Man From The Cave" he was bringing the 'trunkman' back to life, and a lot about American history.
