Nebraska (NE) hiking is defined by wide-open plains and prairies, but hikers can find forests, ridges, and canyons here as well.
The Great Plains cover most of Nebraska and provide meandering paths through wide-open country. Nebraska National Forest highlights just that, with plenty of trails criss-crossing its treeless prairies. Lake hikes are popular with scenic trails skirting Prairie and Frontier Lakes offering hikers a chance to take a swim. The Missouri River also offers water-based hikes that keep hikers cool and provide a stunning view of the river.
North Nebraska holds trails that wind through mixed-grass prairies and grass covered sand dunes. Trails in West Nebraska cover a different terrain with popular spots like Chimney Rock, and wilderness areas like Pine Ridge, which has paths that lead through forested buttes, rocky ridges, and steep canyons. Don't forget to check out urban trails near Omaha and Lincoln as well!
