Hiking in Vermont (VT) offers hikers plenty of scenic trails to choose from, from the shores of Lake Champlain to the mountain tops of the Green Mountain range.

The Green Mountains in Green Mountain National Forest, just south of Rutland, are the highlight of Vermont hiking. Nine hundred miles of trails meander through the forest's wilderness with trails ranging from easy to difficult, making this area perfect for families with small children and avid hikers alike. The famous and ever-popular Appalachian Trail runs through the Green Mountains providing strenuous hikes for both day hikers and backpackers.

You'll find trails near Stowe, just north of Montpelier, that lead up steep climbs to the top of Mt. Mansfield, the highest point in Vermont, where hikers can enjoy scenic mountain top views. Smuggler's Notch is close by and hikers will find plenty of summer trails that traverse the mountain, but in winter most of the mountain is turned into ski trails. Hikers will find trails all throughout Vermont that wander through deep forests, open meadows, and beautiful marshes. Lake Champlain, in Western Vermont, also offers lake trails that skirt its scenic shore line, while the Connecticut River, in Eastern Vermont, has riverside hiking trails that provide beautiful views of the pristine river.
