Usually my winter weekends are filled with skiing.  However, when I woke up today (December 8th) the high temperature at the local ski resort was forecasted to be 8 degrees F.  The wind was going to be blowing 10-15 mph, and I just thought, “I can’t do it.”

Down here in the valley, around 10am the sun peeked out from behind the clouds and I decided to head out for a trail run/hike at the Lunch Loop trails.  The temperatures have been so low lately that the snow out there has held up; there wouldn’t be any mud to deal with!

Still, the temps were only in the high teens here, so I had to make sure and dress appropriately:  I pulled on my Injinji toe socks and some Smartwool hiking socks, thermals and my old winter leggings, a base layer thermal followed by an REI mid-layer shirt, and a North Face hoodie.  I wore my Mountain Hardware gloves and favorite stocking cap, and headed out with my sunglasses on.  Sunglasses–it was sunny!  Finally!

Though part of me regretted not being up on the mountain skiing, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of our trails in winter.  Here are some photos from the trip:

Looking towards the Bookcliffs from the Lunch Loop parking area

I wasn’t the only one who’d headed out in the snow recently…

Someone had recently been out on a Fat Bike!

If I had to guess, I’d say a bunny had been hopping his way down the trail…

As I returned to the parking lot, I saw this brave guy headed out on his bike.

What a beautiful day to be out, whether skiing, hiking, or trail running.  Whenever there is blue sky to be had, I want to be out enjoying it!
