This was a nice campground off the main road, nestled up against the Manistee River, a few miles away from Frederic.
When one enters the campground, the sites closest to the entrance are set up for folks with horses. I had never visited a campground where horses could also reside and it made it a very interesting sight to see!
However, for non-horse owners, the main camping sites are further back along the very edge of the Manistee River, with plenty of stairs and other walk-way accesses down to the river.
The campsites we stayed at (#2, #3, and #4) were quite large and accommodated our pop-up campers and other camping accessories with no problem and provided plenty of room for group fires at night.
The canoeing we did was via Long's Canoe Livery, who shuttled us up-river where we were able to canoe back right to our campsite to stop for lunch, then continue on until we reached Long's where our cars awaited us.
There were outhouses available nearby, which were pretty clean for the most part and were always stocked with toilet paper. We did have to drive out into the horse-camping area to find a water pump, but the water was crisp, clear, clean and cold!
All in all, even though we were there for only a weekend, it felt like we were gone from home a lot longer and the peace and quiet of the campsite itself (never once heard the horses!) as well as the courtesy of our fellow camping neighbors, made this a place I would definitely want to visit again anytime soon!
