We camped at Hoffmaster State Park in July 2012 and what a pleasant experience it was. First of all, the sites were heavily shaded and spacious.
The bathhouses seemed updated. Private shower stalls were tiled floor to ceiling, had ample room, and even a bench to sit on. Did I mention that they were individual rooms each with a locking door!
The campsite was family friendly and hosted kid activities each day as well as other nature experiences at the Gilette Vistor Center. This center had a nice fountain in the rear of the building, plus a discovery room filled with local fauna.
The beaches were pristine. The camp ground had a private beach site. There is also a larger beach in the park with nice facilities, including changing rooms.
A nice trail led from our camp site over a creek (more kid fun) and then through the dunes to the sugar sand beach along Lake Michigan. The lake was refreshing, clean and had some nice wave action. My boys loved it. "It's like Florida without the salt!"
This park had a surprisingly diverse and rich backdune forest. Plenty of trails to explore and a dune overlook that is worth climbing.
I recommend this park, especially for those with children. We have four teen boys, but many families had many younger children. It is family friendly, and actually tranquil after quiet hours. Would go back again and again!
