Cherry Creek Dam, located at the southeast edge of Denver in Aurora, CO, was the first of the three dams to be built to protect the Denver region from catastrophic South Platte River floodwaters that plagued the area for more than 100 years. Recreational opportunities include camping, fishing, picnicking, an archery/rifle range, a horse stable, nature and bike trails, a marina, and a swimming area. The park is open year-round.

Nature walk is more apt than hiking, as far as Cherry Creek Reservoir is concerned. Even then, the official trails that I remember from when I used to ride my mountain bike on years ago are now completely closed. The few trails I found are more than likely unauthorized because they end up going nowhere.

A lot has changed since I was last here. Trash all over the place in the parking lot despite close by dumpsters, dog crap all over the beach, the bathrooms at one of the swim beaches are totally trashed.

It's still a fun place to get in some cycling, or just hang out, but from a purely hiking standpoint, it's very disappointing.
