The Benton MacKaye is one of the wildest long-distance backpacking trails in the nation. Unlike the A.T., the B.M.T. eschews cities, shelters, parks, and campgrounds wherever possible and instead opts for as wild and pristine of a route and experience as possible. It runs a total of 288 miles.

The BMT runs for about 50 miles through the state of Georgia until it crosses the border into Tennessee.
